The xylem and phloem are grown within the central section of a root called a stele. The word xylem is derived from the greek word ξύλον xylon meaning wood. In monocots the center of the stele is composed.

Xylem transports water and mineral salts from the roots up to other parts of the plant. Xylem is one of the two types of transport tissue in vascular plants phloem being the other. In a mature flowering plant or tree most of the cells that make up the xylem are specialised cells. In eudicots the xylem usually forms a cross of cells within the stele which runs the length of the root.
