A flip flop is a memory cell or bistable that can exist in two states either a 1 or a 0. The heart or guts of a shift register is based on a flip flop. A group of flip flops which is used to store multiple bits of data and the data is moved from one flip flop to another is known as shift register the bits stored in registers shifted when the clock pulse is applied within and inside or outside the registers.

The circuit consists of four d flip flops which are connected. The first type sipo is useful for controlling a large number of outputs including leds while the latter type piso is good for gathering a large. The sn74hc595n is a simple 8 bit shift register ic. The shift register which allows parallel input data is given separately to each flip flop and in a simultaneous manner and produces a serial output is known as parallel in serial out shift register.
