Gfci receptacles are required in bathrooms garages crawl spaces basements laundry rooms and areas where a water source is present. The ground terminal of outlet is connected to the ground bar in the mains distribution board. Line essentially means supply.
Connect the wires make sure the amp rating of your new gfci outlet matches the amp rating of the wiring and breaker or fuse.
The line hot live or phase is directly connected to the gfci input and the output is connected to the line terminal of ordinary outlet receptacle. The line terminals of a gfci outlet connect to the power supply conductors that are connect at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Gfci protection is required for 125 volt to 250 volt receptacles supplied by single phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to the ground. It will protect all devices on that entire branch if properly installed.
